Local Control

Our local elected officials and public servants are our own community’s industry experts. They understand what needs to be maintained, updated and improved to ensure that our community is a desired location for both businesses and families. Decisions influencing only our community should be made by those we have elected to represent our voice and directly impacted, rather than representatives and senators living across the state. Leawood and Overland Park are nationally recognized for fiscal responsibility, due in large part to outstanding local government control. During his first term, Jan demonstrated his commitment to our local governments and continues to work to ensure continued support is given to our locally elected officials.

Our school districts are our community’s most valuable assets and are the root of Leawood and Overland Park’s economic vitality, public safety and health.  Throughout his first term, Jan advocated for proper funding for both Blue Valley and Shawnee Mission schools to flourish. Jan’s three daughters are the product of Blue Valley schools, one of whom is now a teacher in the Blue Valley School District, allowing Jan to maintain a unique perspective, understanding the needs of public school students, teachers and parents. Our schools attract businesses and families alike to join our community. We must promote sustainable funding to continue this positive trend.

Fiscal Responsibility

Fiscal responsibility is paying the bills without borrowing while funding vital services such as education, infrastructure and KPERs. This past term, the legislature constructed a tax plan to solve the issues created beginning in 2012. As a member of the powerful Appropriations Committee, Jan has worked to keep spending in check while fully funding and investing in education, infrastructure and KPERs and will continue to support sensible spending and funding solutions.
